Why I'm building Split Gate

I train calisthenics and race HYROX. No single tool could tell me whether I was getting better at the whole thing, so I built one.

Quick answer

Split Gate is a rating, a league and a training record for hybrid athletes. It shows where your race time went station by station, turns the training between races into a predicted finish time, and gives gyms a season league for the weeks when nobody is racing.

  • A results PDF gives you splits, but it doesn't say which station cost you the most against people at your level.
  • Hybrid training is spread over several sports, so progress needs one record, not an app per discipline.
  • A league in the gym makes ordinary training weeks count, and that is what keeps people training.
  • Split Gate is built by one person who races, so what you write goes to the person who can change the product.

I'm a hybrid athlete: I train calisthenics, running and strength, and I race HYROX. I'm also a programmer, which is how a complaint turned into a product. This post explains what was missing, what Split Gate does about it, and where it is going.

The problem I kept running into

After a HYROX race you get a PDF of your splits, and that's all. You can see how long the sled push took. You can't see whether that is a good time for someone with your result, or which station cost you the most. Comparing yourself with the winner of your age group doesn't help either: they are faster everywhere, so the comparison says nothing about where your own minutes went.

Training had the same gap. A strength app knows nothing about my running. A running app knows nothing about wall balls. Bodyweight work fits in neither. I could tell I was training hard, but not whether I was getting better at the whole thing.

The third gap was the calendar. A race is one day, and the preparation takes months. Between races nothing told me whether the work was showing, and an ordinary Tuesday session had no reason behind it except discipline.

A race is one day. The training before it takes months, and those months deserve a scoreboard too.

What Split Gate does for an athlete

  • Reads your race. Type in the sixteen splits from your results, or run a simulation in the gym against the built-in stopwatch. Split Gate sets each run and station against athletes who finished around your time: red is where you lost time, green is where you gained it.
  • Keeps one training record. Runs, stations, strength and your own exercises go into the same log, typed or spoken. Every exercise keeps its best result and its trend, and a personal best is flagged the moment you save.
  • Predicts your next race. On the Pro plan your training feeds a predicted finish time and shows which stations are moving it, so you know before race day whether the work is showing.
  • Plans the week. Also on Pro: a week built from your race date, your weakest station and what you logged last time.
  • Ranks you. Races move your rating, and training earns points in your gym's league.

Official races and gym simulations are kept apart. A simulation is useful, but it is not a race result, so each has its own personal best and only official times are shown to other people.

Why a league, and why in the gym

Most of the year there is no race. A league inside your gym makes those weeks count: training and races earn points for a season with a start, an end and a prize the gym sets. The table changes every week, and you can see who is closing in on you.

I put the league in the gym on purpose. A global ranking is a list of strangers. In a gym league you know the person two places above you, and you will see them at training on Thursday. The standings can run on the gym's TV, and a poster with a QR code on the wall is all it takes to join: a member scans it and creates a free account.

What coaches and gyms get

Hybrid training is rarely done alone, so the people who run it need tools of their own.

  • Coaches see every client with their best time, their trend and their last seven days. They can put a session on a client's week and plan a group class where the station rotation is generated for them. The class board runs on a TV, and results are logged for everyone at once, each into the athlete's own record.
  • Gyms run season leagues and their own events, list their coaches on a public page, and get a monthly report that shows who stayed, who came back and who went quiet.

The aim is the same on both sides: fewer spreadsheets and group chats, more time on the floor.

How I decide what to build

Three rules have held so far.

  1. 1Your own numbers first. Every screen should answer a question about you: where the time went, what improved, what comes next. There is enough generic advice everywhere else.
  2. 2Logging must be faster than not logging. When writing down a session takes longer than a minute, people stop doing it. That is why you can repeat a session with today's numbers, or speak it instead of typing.
  3. 3Honest about what a number means. A predicted time is an estimate from your training, and the app says how confident it is. A simulation is not a race. The AI analysis reads your splits; it does not replace a coach.

Where it stands

I design, build and support Split Gate myself. It is a web app that works on a phone and on a computer, in English and Slovak; a mobile app comes later. There is a free plan. The paid plans add the race analysis, the weekly plan and the predicted time for athletes, and the tools for coaches and gyms.

HYROX is where Split Gate started, not where it ends. In the future I want you to be able to choose your sport, for example DEKA, Spartan, boxing or ski mountaineering, and have the app adapt to it, so that an athlete who trains calisthenics and a HYROX racer each see what matters to them.

Building alone has one advantage: when you write to me, the person who reads it is the person who can change the product.

If you race, coach or run a gym, see how Split Gate works and what it does for athletes, then tell me what's missing.
